Forged as an idea to help his patients that eventually grew into something bigger, when Jarryd Langford pitched the idea of a retirement home resident championship in the Illawarra there were major doubts around whether he could make it happen.
The logistics of transporting and accomodating people of all abilities from their retirement homes to a bowling club was definitely a logistical mountain to climb.
On Friday December 1, Jarryd’s dream was made a reality.
Thanks to the support of the Warilla Bowling Club and Bowls New South Wales, 32 players and 150 spectators attended the inaugural AHP Illawarra Bowls championship for retirement home residents.
In a major donation to the cause, Warilla donated and built a $3000 ramp to allow all players up on to their synthetic green, with significant redevelopment required at the facility to accomodate the residents.
Woonona Marco Polo ended up as the winning side on the day with their training sessions and local coaching paying off.
