Werribee Bowls Club volunteer Rhonda Edwards has been honoured with the 2018 City of Wyndham Citizen and Sports & Recreation Volunteer of the Year during a recent gala ceremony.

Rhonda has been a tireless volunteer of the club for a number of years, introducing a number of new initiatives in her role as Community, Events and Social Media Coordinator.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Peter Maynard, said she was a deserving winner.

“As a volunteer at the Werribee Bowls Club, Rhonda has demonstrated tremendous passion for increasing community participation in lawn bowls,” Cr Maynard said.

“Rhonda has helped grow the bowls club and has made vital contributions to its sustainability. She has developed partnerships and leads a team of volunteers to create and deliver several new community programs, which have introduced more than 4,000 people to lawn bowls in the last three years alone.

“Rhonda has been the driving force behind several successful programs that have helped introduce lawn bowls to new and diverse groups, including Girls on the Green, Bowling with Babies, CALDplay, and programs for multicultural seniors and people with disability.

“Her passion for her sport is clear to anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Rhonda and her successful efforts to share that passion with as many people as possible has created a legacy that will last for decades to come.

Bowls Australia (BA) Regional Bowls Manager (Metropolitan Melbourne/Geelong) Paul Holtschke was glowing in his praise for Rhonda.

“I cannot emphasise enough the amount of work Rhonda has contributed to the club over the past two and half years which is lead to this acknowledgment,” he said.

“The hours both at the club and behind the scenes that Rhonda has contributed is amazing. Nothing is too hard for her and she always wants the best for the club and the sport.”
