2024 World Bowls Indoor Championships: Day 2 wrap
It was yet another successful day in Guernsey for Ray Pearse and Samantha Atkinson as the Australian pair enjoyed a second straight unblemished outing at the World Bowls Indoor Championships.
Atkinson would not be required to take to the green in singles with the men’s discipline and mixed pairs taking centre stage on the English Channel island as the competition began to take shape.
The Australian duo would face Swiss pair Beat Matti and Marianne Kuenzle in their only pairs contest of the day, clinching it comfortably 9-2 7-5 as they entrenched themselves at the top of their section.
Pearse enjoyed a victory in his only scheduled singles encounter, overcoming Jamaica’s Robert Simpson in a blistering display.
The Australian raced out of the blocks in the opening set to lead 9-0 after four ends before Simpson rallied to take the fifth and look to close the gap.
Momentum would remain with Pearse however, as he raced away to a 14-2 set victory.
The onslaught would continue in the second stanza as the New South Welshman took a 6-0 buffer after three before his counterpart managed to take one back on end for.
But undeterred, Pearse piled on the shots to record one of the biggest wins of the tournament so far, finishing the set with eleven shots from the final three ends to win 14-2 17-1.
He sits on top of his section with three rounds to go.
