2024 World Champion of Champions: Day 2 recap
It was another prosperous day for Australia at the 2024 World Champion of Champions, with both Lee Schraner and Laini McGorman remaining undefeated after a couple of crucial victories.
After a day of getting used to the quick greens at Browns Bay Bowling Club, Schraner showed why he has had so much success in this event in the past by not dropping a set for the day.
Before the day’s play, Canada’s Pat Bird was undefeated and sat above Schraner on the ladder, but the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club product was unfazed by his matchup with the Canadian and cruised to 7-3 10-1 victory.
Schraner did not take a step back against Hungarian Zoltan Pavelka, finishing his day off with style and storming to a 13-2 19-0 win.
The New South Welshman sits second in Section 3, with only New Zealand young gun Aiden Takarua sitting above him.
The pair will meet tomorrow morning in what will be a cracking match.
Pre-tournament favourite Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple is in first spot in Section 1 with 3 wins, while India’s Putul Sonowal remains undefeated on top of Section 2.
It was a similar story in the women’s singles, with McGorman continuing her fine form from the first day to triumph in her two games in straight sets.
The Australian was too good for her opponents, cruising to a 5-3 9-3 win against Hong Kong China’s Yat Ting (Gloria) Ha and emphatically defeating Sharon Barnes from the Falkland Islands 10-2 8-3.
McGorman, who is in second place in Section 2, will face off with India’s Nayan Moni Saikia, who is also undefeated, tomorrow morning.
Last year’s women’s singles champion Anne Nunes from the United States of America is well placed to defend her crown after finishing the day undefeated alongside England’s Stef Branfield in Section 3.
In Section 1, Niue’s Joy Peyroux remains the only competitor with an unblemished record after three matches.
