2025 Right at Home Jackaroos squads announced

by Val Febbo on November 6, 2024

The sport’s National Selection Panel has confirmed the Right at Home Australian Jackaroos squads for 2025, as the high performance program builds towards Glasgow 2026, with the teams bolstered by new talent and a new performance pathways model.

The panel, which comprises of selectors Therese HastingsDave Stockham, National Assistant Coach Karen Murphy AM, National Coach Gary Willis and Chair Steve Glasson OAM, have replenished the main squad following two international retirements, while rewarding scintillating form across the feeder teams.

The open men’s squad has seen two changes made, with Queensland’s Kane Nelson rewarded for his string of solid performances in place of the retiring Aron Sherriff.

Nelson was named as the skipper of one of the three rinks for the Maroons at the Australian Sides Championships and continued that form by taking gold in the men’s triples and fours at the recent Australian Championships.

After receiving one cap back in 2010 before announcing his retirement from international bowls, Lee Schraner has once again found himself among the open squad following his outstanding body of work over recent years, including  one World Champion of Champions titles, two Alley Shield contributions and a plethora of other awards across his state.

He comes in for Matt Lucas, who has retired from international duties in a bid to launch a new coaching business as he looks to aid clubs in setting goals and improving in their chosen competitions.

The Queenslander earned 41 caps for Australia since his debut in 2022 that included the critical UK tour at Leamington Spa ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, as well as the 2023 Multi-Nations, in which he claimed an international gold in the men’s triples.

Bowls Australia thank Matt for his excellent contribution to the Jackaroos.

The Emerging squad has seen Victoria’s Olivia Cartwright jump into the team following a string of brilliant performances since her maiden open national title in the women’s fours at the 2023 Australian Open.

Cartwright will take part in November’s Oceania Challenge and don the green and gold regalia for the first time in her career.

Joining her in the feeder team are the New South Wales pair of Samantha Ferguson (Club Merrylands) and Erin Swatridge (St Johns Park), both are no strangers to key National performances with Ferguson claiming Australian Open Fours titles and a Silver medal in last years National Singles Champion of Champions whilst Swatridge has already gathered two National titles winning the 2019 Australian Fours and Mixed Pairs.

Following a barnstorming 2024, New South Wales’ Jack McShane has leapt into the Emerging squad thanks to his Australian Open men’s pairs gold, fours silver, Australian Indoor title and triples silver at the Australian Championships at The Nationals.

McShane’s Australian Open winning teammate in Joseph Clarke has also made the move into the squad following his impressive body of work that included the pairs title and  Australian Open fours silver, while showing promise across club and state level.

Joining McShane and Clarke in the men’s Emerging line-up is the 2024 Australian Champion of Champions conqueror in Jacob Nelson, with his fellow Queenslander and State pairs Champion Dale McWhinney-Shillington, New South Wales’ 2023 State Singles Champion and National Singles silver medallist Jack Lewis added in addition with Victoria’s Tyson Cromie who won gold at the 2023 National Development Series.

Perhaps the largest change to the high-performance setup is the launch of the State-Based Jackaroos Academies, which take the place of the former Pathways squad.

Jackaroos State-Based Academies will be managed by the state-based BA Performance Pathways Coaches in partnership with each specific state association, coaches and selection committee in a combined effort to bring the nation’s rising stars through the pathway on their journey towards future podium success.

With a focus on creating a connected team environment, providing education around High Performance, behaviours and culture, the academies across Australia will aim to support and enhance the potential and current representative athletes on their development journeys, as a conduit and in conjunction with, state based programs including juniors through to open state representative teams.

The Para squad sees one new face come into the team, with New South Wales’ Carolyn Nelson making her way in, with no inclusions into the vision-impaired line-up.

Nelson has well and truly earned her call up, prevailing in the women’s B5/6 singles at the Para Nationals last month.

The Emerging Para Jackaroos sees one new addition, in Victoria’s Annette Ruffle following a string of solid performances across state and national level, going from strength to strength following her Clover Lester Encouragement Award at the 2023 Para Nationals.

Following recent announcements surrounding the clarity of the Commonwealth Games, National Coach Gary Willis says he is thrilled with the squads assembled as the push continues towards the next major international block and beyond.

“Firstly I would like to congratulate all selected athletes we are extremely excited by the 2025 Right at Home Australian Jackaroos squad and the bolstered contingents, which reinforces the outstanding depth of talent to choose from within the country,” Willis said.

“I must commend the National Selection Panel who have been extremely thorough in their efforts to ensuring both short- and long-term success for the national team.

“They have worked diligently with our state pathways coaches and associations in forming the state based academies that will set the platform for a vast number of promising bowlers from across Australia, I am very excited to see the Academy squads develop and grow, working closely, and in conjunction, with state associations, their Coaches and selectors right across the Nation”.

“I would also like to acknowledge the work of our pathway’s coaches and the pathways program with many of the players transitioning and being promoted into emerging and open squads. Finally, to our HP staff who work so hard to bring this all together and have a fantastic program planned for these athletes over the next twelve months.”

“The team now embarks on a new and exciting era in 2025, building towards what we hope is going to be a successful campaign at Glasgow 2026.”
