Senior Sides Championships: Victoria continues form

At the Broadbeach Bowls Club, it was an eventful day as states made their moves for the coveted titles in both of the respective Senior Sides Championships.

Victoria continued its dominance over both competitions, finishing the penultimate day in top spot of both the men’s and women’s event.

In the women’s tournament, the state would record a first up 69-55 win over Western Australia before taking down Tasmania 69-45 to hold a one win advantage with just two rounds to play.

Second placed Queensland would also account for Tasmania with a 71-37 victory before a narrowly fought 53-50 win over South Australia, who split its ledger with one win and one loss for the afternoon.

The upset of the day came from the Northern Territory, who stunned New South Wales with some sensational performances to record a thrilling 54-48 victory in round four.

It was the NT’s first win of the competition as the state leapfrogged Tasmania to jump off the bottom of the table, with New South Wales dropping from third to fourth following the defeat.

The men’s event sees the top four teams all on four wins with just two rounds to play with a tantalising finish on the cards.

Queensland began the day unblemished and would maintain it through the state’s fourth matchup with a closely fought 58-48 win over Tasmania before falling victim to an inspired South Australia who ended the day in third as one of the states in contention.

The chasing Victoria would maintain the pressure as with a brilliant display against Western Australia, winning 66-40, before recording a 67-46 win over Tasmania to clinch top spot.

New South Wales joined the trio of states on four wins and will face a tough test of facing both Victoria and Queensland tomorrow in championship deciding matchups.
