World Champion of Champions: Day 4 recap
There will be no Australian medal at the 2023 World Champion of Champions at Robina following Karen Murphy’s elimination in the quarterfinals.
After topping her section over the first few days of the tournament, the 48-year-old would be pitted against Singapore’s Philomena Goh Quee Kee in the quarterfinals after the latter booked passage out of a tough section.
The opening set saw the Singapore native take an early lead before Murphy secured a three on the fifth end to tie it.
Stanza two saw the Goh Quee Kee go through without the loss of an end before a tense final set that saw the Australian lead with one exchange to play.
Goh Quee Kee was able to save the set and claim a 5-5 6-0 3-3 victory to set up a clash with 2022 semifinalist Anne Nunes, who overcame Canada’s Jordan Kos 9-0 1-6 4-1.
The other semi will see Guernsey’s 2009 silver medallist Lucy Beere take on Malaysia’s Nurul Alyani Jamil with both looking to become their respective nation’s second ever champion at the tournament.
In the men’s draw, Australia’s Jono Davis concluded his tournament with a 2-9 6-2 5-3 victory over Hong Kong’s Ka Ho Lee to finish in fifth place.
Scotland’s Darren Gualtieri will face England’s Ed Morris in the first semifinal, while 2022 runner up Izzat Dzulkeple will face Wales’ Daniel Salmon in the bottom half of the draw.
