2024 Nationals: Day 1 wrap

by Val Febbo on October 8, 2024

The opening day of The Nationals for 2024 was an eventful one, even if there was just one session scheduled.

It was Australian Champion of Champions action with play starting outside in the evening before lightning began to loom over the skies of Club Tweed.

Due to the inclement weather, the matchups were moved inside onto the Club’s indoor green to conclude the inaugural session of the event.

The women’s event saw Dawn Hayman win the battle between her and fellow Right at Home Jackaroo Kristina Krstic 21-13, while their fellow Australian teammate Chloe Stewart overcame Brooke Edwards 21-12.

In the other results, Emerging Jackaroo Chloe Morrison defeated Tasmania’s Jess McMullen 21-11 and South Australia’s Karen Gatto overcame the Northern Territory’s Anita Rhook 21-18.

The men’s event saw three pulsating matchups with 2020 champion Trystan Smallacombe overcoming a strong test from Angaston’s Jono Voigt with a 21-18 victory.

2023 Australian Open singles runner up Jacob Nelson would also navigate his way through a tricky matchup against Victoria’s Brad Marron with a 21-19 win, while Hayden Ward of the ACT also beat Tasmania’s Jason Fowler 21-19.
