2021 Australian Champion of Champions: Day One wrap
Two men have made an early claim for the coveted 2021 Australian Champion of Champions title at Broadbeach Bowls Club on the Gold Coast, while in the women’s competition sees a duo of Right at Home Jackaroos at the top of the pack following day one.
On a day where the rain bucketed down for significant portions, Queensland’s Jake Rynne shone at times where the sun couldn’t, holding top spot heading into tomorrow’s final day.
Rynne holds a score differential of +44 from his four matches, 14 ahead of fellow undefeated competitor, Victorian Lee Schraner.
The two-time champion of the event survived two scares on day one, recovering from an 11-17 defecit against the ACT’s Richard Lawson and a 14-18 scoreline against Western Australian Cody Packer to continue his charge to hold the outright record for most titles at the event, one which he currently shares with Scott Thulborn.
Packer ended the day in third at two wins and two losses, with both blemishes coming to Rynne and Schraner, while the Northern Territory’s Mark Malogorski and South Australian Will McPharlin share the same ledger in fourth and fifth respectively.
Lawson sits in sixth with one win and three losses with Tasmania’s Tim Douce only trailing on shot difference.
New South Wales’ Peter Taylor rounds out the eight, with no wins from his quartet of matches.
In the women’s competition, Jackaroos Chloe Stewart and Rebecca Van Asch have set themselves up for an epic opening encounter on day two with both undefeated after the second session.
Stewart was on song in both of her matches, overcoming a close start against the ACT’s Chloe Morrison before maintaining a healthy advantage over South Australia’s Kathy Miller.
Van Asch on the other hand was pushed, first by Miller, and then by fellow Jackaroo Carla Krizanic in a matchup of the highest quality.
Krizanic would finish the day in third for Victoria with a healthy shot difference, while Morrison shares an even ledger following her gutsy win over Sarah James of the Northern Territory.
Miller ended the day in fifth, followed by James on shot difference.
