2022 Australian Open: Day 7 wrap
Day seven of the 2022 Australian Open saw the men’s fours knockout rounds commence while the women’s fours sectional phase was run and won on a picturesque afternoon on the Gold Coast.
Defending men’s champions in Ray Pearse, Aaron Hewson, Ben Twist and Dave Ferguson have progressed through to the fourth round, conceding just 16 shots in their opening two matches before overcoming a significant challenge against Ryan Burnett, Mike Carroll, Kevin Anderson and Ryan Bester 16-13 in the third round.
The foursome will meet the team of Wayne Ruediger, Nathan Pedersen, Gary Kelly and Carl Healey, who conceded 27 shots en route to the round of 16.
On the other side of the draw, Barrie Lester, Aaron Teys, Corey Wedlock and Aron Sherriff progressed through comfortably, continuing to mount their charge towards the pointy end of the tournament.
Jay Dawe, Steven Tong, Wayne Turley OAM and Sean Ingham also enjoyed a successful day, emerging victorious in their final encounter of the day 21-2.
Right at Home Jackaroo Matt Lucas skipped his team to the final 16 that will face off against an all Victorian squad with Thor Shannon as the anchor.
In the women’s fours sectional phase, three of last year’s defending champions in Lynsey Clarke, Sam Ferguson and Kelsey Cottrell were unblemished in their three matches with Rebecca Van Asch as the skip.
The squad of Jamie Lee Worsnop, Genevieve Delves, Dawn Hayman and Natasha Van Eldik would claim victories in their trio of matches to enter the knockout rounds, while Ellen Ryan, Brianna Smith, Ellen Falkner and Kristina Krstic joined their counterparts with a full count of wins for the day.
Other notable teams to progress were that of Jessie Cottell, Kira Bourke, Cassandra Millerick and Bolivia Millerick, as well as Grace Moloney, Sophie Kurzman, Rebekah Lord and Emerging Jackaroo Kate Argent-Bowden.
Teenager Tayla de Greenlaw will feature in the knockout rounds after progressing to the semi-finals in 2021, as will Serena Bonnell, who will be on her way to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games next month.
The Australian Open continues tomorrow, with the men’s singles knockout round of 512 through to 128 and the women’s singles 128 through to 32.
