Ettalong create history to win 2024 BPL Cup
New South Wales’ Ettalong has created history by becoming the first team in BPL Cup history to successfully defend the title as Nathan Malloy, Lee Trethowan and Darren Morrison kept a hold on the coveted trophy.
Up against their fellow section two alumni in Berri from South Australia in the final, the 2023 winners started well by taking two singles in the opening ends before netting a two in end three to gain a four-shot buffer heading into the power plays.
Ettalong took their double shot offer first and made good use of it to clinch a two, which made four, leaving Berri with their own power play to make a charge for the first set.
The deciding end of the opening stanza would fall the way of the New South Wales combination as they put one hand firmly on the trophy once again.
Set two began in similar fashion as the club just under and a half from Sydney netted a double to take a stranglehold on the contest.
Ettalong gained a 4-0 advantage in the second stanza as the power play end ensued, as both teams called theirs in a bid to either win the matchup or force it on.
It was the South Australians who claimed the end to remain alive but it was to no avail as Ettalong reached the summit once again to win 9-0 4-3 become the first club to win the event twice and defend the crown.
Trethowan also earned his own slice of history as the first two-time final MVP and the first to do it back-to-back.
