World Bowls Indoor Championships: Day 3 recap
It was an intriguing day for the Australian contingent at the 2024 World Bowls Indoor Championships in Guernsey overnight as the tournament heads towards its climax.
Ray Pearse enjoyed a day off from singles and would only need to front up in a solitary mixed pairs contest with Samantha Atkinson.
The duo would take on Namibia’s Carel and Yvonne Olivier in what would prove to be a tight tussle with the green and gold team securing two singles in the deciding ends of the opening set to tie it and put the pressure on their opponents.
Pearse and Atkinson netted a two in the opening end of the second stanza before the Oliviers raced away to a 6-2 buffer after four.
Team Australian tightened the screws once more to narrow the gap to a single shot with three ends to play.
Namibia would reciprocate immediately by netting a triple of their own to gain a four shot lead heading into the concluding end, where the Australians would only be able to secure a single with the African nation triumphantly recording a 5-5 9-6 win.
Atkinson and Pearse still sit in second place in their section, needing to win their final contest against the Isle of Man to put themselves in a strong position to progress to the knockout rounds.
The women’s singles event saw Atkinson continue her unblemished record as she overcame a tricky test against Singapore’s May Lee Beng Hua.
The Richmond Union exponent raced out of the blocks in the first set, storming to a 6-2 lead after three before her counterpart’s tenacious mentality allowed her to claim three of the final four ends to level the set at 7-7.
However, the Victorian kept her foot to the floor, producing one of the most brilliant sets of the week to claim it 10-2 to sit second in her section with a game in hand.
