World Bowls Indoor Championships: Day 4 recap
Guernsey is proving to be a fruitful hunting venue for Ray Pearse and Samantha Atkinson as the pair enjoyed yet another unblemished day at the 2024 World Bowls Indoor Championships across all three disciplines.
Both have all but ensured that they will progress to the knockout stage of the singles, while they must wait with baited breath in the mixed pairs with a bye in the final sectional round.
Atkinson was in fine form against Israel’s Irit Grencel, showing no signs of slowing down as she stormed to a 12-3 9-3 victory to cement her spot at the top of section 3.
She sits one win clear of Wales’ Sara Nicholls, as well as being four ahead in the net sets and 20 ahead in shot difference, putting her in a strong position to progress to the quarterfinals with just one more matchup to come against Norfolk Island’s Christine Jones.
Pearse has also placed himself in a mighty position, defeating Stanley Gon Lap Lai of Hong Kong China 10-2 5-3 before overcoming Turkiye’s Ozkan Akar 9-3 4-4 in his final contest of the afternoon.
The New South Welshman has extended the gap to Ozkan in second place, with the difference being a win, four set points and a whopping 25 shots, which mathematically almost guarantees the Australian’s place in the quarters.
Despite Pearse and Atkinson conquering their mixed pairs encounter with an extremely thrilling 4-8 7-6 1-0 win over the Isle of Man’s Clive McGreal and Caroline Whithead, the Australians must wait for the final round of results to occur to determine whether they progress to the knockout rounds.
The pair sits on top of their section, but with a bye in the final round the team will hope that one of Wales or Namibia suffers a defeat at the hands of Switzerland and the Isle of Man respectively.
