World Bowls Indoor Championships: Day 6 recap
The quest for gold remains for the Australian contingent at the 2024 World Bowls Indoor Championships with Ray Pearse and Samantha Atkinson progressing to the semifinals of the mixed pairs discipline in Guernsey.
The duo were also in action in the singles but fell to Malaysia in both events, leaving the mixed as the sole avenue for the nation to taste glory.
Pearse and Atkinson would take on the Scottish lineup of Julie Forrest and Michael Stepney, both of whom have conquered the event in singles play on previous occasions.
However, the green and gold pair would race out of the blocks to blow their opponents away, storming to a 13-6 opening set win.
The second stanza was much tighter, with the Scots taking a three in the penultimate end to go ahead 7-6.
Under immense pressure, Pearse and Atkinson would be able to secure the single needed to grant them a 13-6 7-7 win and propel them into the semifinals, where they will take on Malaysia’s Nor Farah Ain Abdullah and Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple after they overcame Wales in their quarter.
The Australians will be out for revenge against both Ain Abdullah and Dzulkeple as the Malaysian duo respectively ended the singles campaign of both.
Pearse enjoyed a scintillating start in his matchup, taking the opening set before his counterpart ramped up the pressure to take home a 3-5 8-3 1-0 win.
Atkinson’s quarterfinal saw her storm home in the first stanza but just miss out by a shot before Ain Abdullah lifted her intensity to take a 6-5 9-1 victory.
